Why I start with this blog for a music collector , and which music styles will be covered.

Who am I and why I want to start with this blog?

I am a guy born in 1958, and since my youth I am a real music lover. And an avid collector from vinyl and cd’s. BELIEVE IT OR NOT but I am not using an mp3 player, just very fond of keeping the “hardware” as a collection. It ’s a collection which can be used for playing! I love all these sounds and frequently listen . I am crazy about disco music and all kinds of soul: especially “northern soul” “Belgium popcorn” .. I would like to introduce this kind of music when some releases come to mind !

But my musical favourites are not restricted to this , I have a wider choice but disco and real soul are my all time favourites and I do prefer music you can dance on , so also house , electro , anything that can make my old legs move is ok.

Being a music collector like this I am constantly looking for interesting releases (or re-releases), rarities, remixes.. and I am constantly finding information on the www. So I wonder if I do really have the coolest information, if I can find the most exclusive information and if I find the best price… For this search I am using the internet but I am wondering if I really found the coolest and most exclusive resources (e-shops) and the best information.

Well those days blogs and social networking should offer me a chance to get in touch with the world. As this blog doesn’t have the pretention to be complete , I consider it as a nice gimmick and I would like to receive many interesting comments to help other music collectors and to learn something myself. Would like to give good tips to discover good music and of course receive some other tips in return.

So let yourself go : comment and react!! Send in your comments on the music stuff I am commenting , and let’s share our experiences with e-shopping for music stuff.

“How Digital Discovery Works and What It Means for Consumers, Creators and Culture” is the subtitle for this obligatory reading for anyone who feels involved in music. As for myself: the iPod picture on the cover didn’t attract my attention. Why? Because I am old-time music collector and I need vinyl or cd to make me swing , an MP3 is just like dust on my computer. So the iPod and its culture seems to be not touching me. I only picked up this book as a pass time reading during a boring beach holiday.

And when you are not expecting much.. You do not end up disappointed. I felt like reading an economical study under a coconut tree. David Jennings academically explains how today’s youth on-tight-budgets is switching their music consumption from cd’s to download music. I had to correct my own opinion that downloading music is just a stealing from artists. I was totally unaware of the “discovery” aspect, the “promotional” effect, how could I ignore this impact on the music scene?

This book is packed with examples: blogs, personalized online radio, discovery-services (you know Last.fm?) and many more sites lead to discovery and consumption. David is splitting up the fans into Savants, Enthusiasts and Originators. He is explaining how this digital discovery works.

Yes I am a music fan, and yes I am a collector, but this book made me aware that today’s internet with Web 2.0 is offering me more opportunities in finding out about music I like. When I was a young kid I went to the DJ-orientated record shops in my town to listen to that week releases and newly arrived imports. Today most of this discovering new music can be experienced on the web!

I not want to go into detail, but this is definately recommended reading if you feel involved with today’s music industry. And that is why it gets a small place here on the blog.

You can read the full preface here , it is David Jennings own site, also updates can be found there.
